(AP Photo)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>History was written at the Estadio Azteca on the opening night of the FIFA World Cup 2026, and it wasn&#8217;t only because Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"1\"\/>Seventeen-year-old Gilberto Mora announced himself to the world, becoming the youngest Mexican ever to play at a <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/fifa-world-cup\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\">FIFA World Cup<\/a> and only the sixth-youngest player in tournament history.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"6\"\/>The teenager entered the match in the 65th minute to a thunderous reception from the packed crowd in Mexico City, which included boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez. At 17 years and 240 days, Mora broke a record that had stood since the inaugural World Cup in 1930.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"9\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"11\"\/>He surpassed Manuel &#8220;Chaquetas&#8221; Rosas, who was 18 years and 134 days old when he represented Mexico against France 96 years ago.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"13\"\/>Only Pele (17 years and 235 days), Salomon Olembe (17 years and 185 days), Femi Opabunmi (17 years and 101 days), Samuel Eto&#8217;o (17 years and 99 days) and Northern Ireland&#8217;s Norman Whiteside (17 years and 41 days) were younger on their World Cup debuts.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Who is Gilberto Mora?<br \/><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/>Born in Tuxtla Gutierrez in southern Mexico on October 14, 2008, Mora emerged through the youth ranks at Club Tijuana and made his Liga MX debut shortly before turning 16.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"23\"\/>An attacking midfielder blessed with exceptional game intelligence, creativity and composure under pressure, Mora quickly established himself as one of Mexican football&#8217;s brightest prospects.
