(AP Photo\/Adam Gray)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>New York mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/zohran-mamdani\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\">Zohran Mamdani<\/a> has announced a limited ticket access programme aimed at making the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/fifa-world-cup\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\">FIFA World Cup<\/a> more affordable for New York City residents, with 1,000 subsidised tickets priced at $50 each alongside free round-trip transportation to matches at MetLife Stadium.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"6\"\/>The announcement was made in Harlem\u2019s Little Senegal neighbourhood, widely regarded as the centre of New York\u2019s African football community, as concerns continue growing over soaring ticket and travel costs surrounding the expanded 2026 World Cup across the United States, Canada and Mexico.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"8\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>Mamdani said the initiative was specifically designed to ensure working-class New Yorkers were not excluded from one of the biggest sporting events in the world because of rising prices.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>\u201cA World Cup is coming to our backyard, and we want to ensure working-class New Yorkers have the opportunity to be part of it,\u201d Mamdani said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hdFv2TFWKK8\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" styleobj=\"[object Object]\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" commonstate=\"[object Object]\" frmappuse=\"1\">during the announcement.<br \/><\/a><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>\u201cWe sat down with the Host Committee to make certain this tournament belongs to the people who make this city what it is. Today, 1,000 New Yorkers are going to get into those stands for fifty dollars and a free bus ride. I\u2019m proud that New York City is leading the way.\u201d<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Programme will cover seven matches at MetLife Stadium but excludes the final<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/>The programme will apply to seven of the eight World Cup matches scheduled for MetLife Stadium, which will host five group-stage games, one Round of 32 fixture and one Round of 16 tie during the tournament.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>The only excluded match is the World Cup final on July 19, where some resale ticket prices have already approached nearly $33,000.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>Around 150 tickets are expected to be allocated per eligible match under the scheme, with seats located in the upper bowl of the 82,000-capacity stadium.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"30\"\/>The matches included are:<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"cdatainfo   id-r-component \" data-pos=\"33\">\n<ul>\n<li> Brazil vs Morocco on June 13 <\/li>\n<li> France vs Senegal on June 16 <\/li>\n<li> Norway vs Senegal on June 22 <\/li>\n<li> Ecuador vs Germany on June 25 <\/li>\n<li> Panama vs England on June 27 <\/li>\n<li> A Round of 32 match on June 30 <\/li>\n<li> A Round of 16 match on July 5 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The lottery system will officially open on May 25 and close on May 30, with organisers allowing up to 50,000 entries per day.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/>Each selected winner will be permitted to purchase a maximum of two tickets.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>According to the mayor\u2019s office, the tickets will be non-transferable and distributed directly to successful applicants on matchday as they board buses travelling to the stadium.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"40\"\/>City officials also said multiple verification measures would be used to confirm residency and prevent ticket resale on secondary markets.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"42\"\/>\u201cWe are making sure that working people will not be priced out of the game that they helped to create,\u201d Mamdani said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"45\"\/><\/p>\n<div data-pos=\"0\" class=\"id-r-component iIpbx undefined  &#10;        \">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City residents will get a chance to purchase $50 World Cup tickets\" msid=\"131259004\" width=\"\" title=\"People listen as New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani makes a World Cup soccer tournament announcement at Harlem Tavern, Thursday, May 21, 2026 in New York.
